LEARNING 4 LIFE PHILOSOPHY

It is the belief of MSAD #4 that a comprehensive alternative education program must be maintained in order to meet the needs of students who are in danger of not completing their high school education. This alternative approach will provide the student with a supportive environment and program of learning, which is individualized and personalized to a higher degree than what is generally offered in a traditional school setting. Clear goals and specific objectives for each student will be developed through shared decision making among school administrators (high school principal and guidance counselor), L4L staff, parents and/or guardians and the students themselves. Efforts will be made to establish community involvement which will include, but is not limited to, community service by the student(s) and fostering parental inclusion in their children's academic experience. The program of instruction will be approved and supervised by the L4L Director. Students who have success in the L4L program may, if it is in their best interest, be encouraged to return to the traditional high school setting.

The school district will review the applications. All applicants must have two letters of reference. Each student's plans are personalized to the needs of the student. Requirements include:

•meeting academic standards
•weekly, short classroom meetings
•on-line tutoring
•laptop reviews
•required on-line classes
•school to work opportunities
•student-parent progress meetings
•student mentor placement

Students graduate from Piscataquis Community High School. All transcripts and certificates of completion will recognize the Learning-4-Life program as the vehicle for graduation. Students are invited to participate in the graduation ceremony at P.C.H.S.
